Outside of Stony Plain there is a sign that says “Welcome to Stony Plain, the town with the Painted Past”, and this is very true; we have a lot of murals all over the place dedicated to various individuals who shaped history here.
Israel Umbauch was a farmer who was nominated to be the first Sherriff of Stony Plain, and during his time he built a home near where Main Street is now, dedicated two one-room schoolhouses, built a jail, and chained CN rail to the railroad ties for nonpayment of taxes to the town after the town agreed to move the settlement in order for CN to pass through and allow the town to become a depot.
Thanks for this vignette regarding Israel Umbauch; I really enjoyed it and am definitely recommending this blog to my friends and family. I’m a 15 year old with a blog on finance and economics at shreysfinanceblog.com, and would really appreciate it if you could read and comment on some of my articles, and perhaps reblog some of my posts. Thanks again for this fantastic post.
