STERN: “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”
“In one of the last scenes in the film, as Schindler prepares to flee from the Allies, the Schindlerjuden give Schindler a gold ring made from gold fillings, engraved with the above quotation from the Talmud, the book of Jewish law. After the Allied victory, Schindler is a hunted war criminal. When the workers hear he must flee, they make him the ring as a small token of their appreciation, knowing that there is no way to repay the gift of life. Stern presents the ring to Schindler, telling him the quotation is from the Talmud. The Jews want Schindler to know that by saving them, he has saved humanity.” — SparkNotes on Schindler’s List http://www.sparknotes.com/film/schindlerslist/quotes.html
So last night I went poking around to find a link to a company which sells brass bracelets with numbers on them which are polished by trafficking survivors to advertise on my site. I had seen it in an article earlier and I know I’d advertised them before, but it never truly struck me until last night just how disturbing the fact that such an object even exists truly is.
I looked for “slave” “bracelet” “trafficking” on google. What I got was an entire internet worth of sites advertising for actual slave bracelet paraphanelia instead, which I found very interesting. I have no idea if these bracelets were being sold for consensual BDSM type relationships or if — and this is a very horrifying possibility — they are actually used to enslave people by slavers and trafficking victims.
